The Silent Killer in your Bar Mix
I’ve been debating on whether to write this post or not. A family member brought this Thomas Dux Bar Mix to our Mothers Day celebration last month, and I’ve had the images sitting in my phone since then. One of the reasons I haven’t been able to bring myself to write about it, is I’m just so disappointed with TD. I’m fully aware that they’re owned by Woolworth’s, but the products stocked in the Thomas Dux stores are usually much higher quality, with a decent organic selection, including great Australian Organic Brands like Loving Earth, Cobs Popcorn, Barambah, Planet Organic, Sonoma, etc. When we regularly visit our local Mona Vale Thomas Dux, my partner, Nic, and I have a little joke about how we can’t get out of the store without spending $50, but even though it feels expensive, the products are good.
When brands cheapen their ingredients and put them in front of well meaning shoppers, shoppers that come to that particular store for its quality, its marketed quality, so assume they’re buying, eating and feeding their families good food, us as consumers, even educated consumers get tricked.
When I look at this ingredient panel, I see a number of issues. My trained eyes immediately go to the last ingredient, though it’s the smallest in quantity, this is where the chemicals hide out. And, yes, to my surprise, the infamous Monosodium Glutamate MSG or as Thomas Dux (Woolworths) has stated Enhancer (621). This toxic flavour enhancer has been stated to be worse for your health than cigarettes! I thought we were past this, I mean the knowledge, the studies, with scientific evidence on how bad MSG is for your health is so wide spread, how can a gourmet food supplier be ok with including this in their branded products?
Regular MSG consumption has been linked to:
- Eye Damage
PLUS a list of short-term reactions from numbness, to nausea, to rapid heart beat.
The Thomas Dux website says:
“Our passion for perfection drives us to source only the finest, freshest and most mouth‐wateringly delicious produce from Australia and the world’s premium suppliers.”
I’ll be so bold as to say Thomas Dux; you’re not living up to your passion. I won’t even get started on the carcinogenic soy bean oil, hydrolyzed soy protein, corn syrup and colours in this line up of terrible ingredients. But MSG! MSG I expect to see on a packet of supermarket bought, flavoured chips, not on Thomas Dux branded snacks.
In January 2016, Woolworth’s announced the closure of three of its Thomas Dux stores, with more predicted to close later in 2016. As I said earlier, we shop at TD regularly. It’s not our primary go to for produce, but there are items that we specifically head to our Mona Vale store for, we’re friendly with the cashiers, and do hope that our store is one that is spared from closure…. maybe just a relook at the products that aren’t benefiting their customer.
